And for groups, after Discord mirrored Slack, but geared toward games and socializing instead of work, people moved there from IRC or web chatrooms or whatever they'd been using before. It was time for them to hang up those 15-year-old Skype accounts and roll out the new stuff.įor personal use, even years ago people had switched to Facebook messenger or Whatsapp etc. So when companies that hadn't done remote/distributed suddenly had to, the natural choices where Slack and Zoom - that's what all the remote/distributed companies were using. ![]() Many companies soon moved to Zoom because it just worked better and easier than the old alternatives. ![]() Those videoconferencing programs were better, but not great. There was a variety of software for videoconferencing, screen sharing, and webinars, because Skype could kind of handle a you-and-me videocall, but sucked at all those other use cases. It was just far better for messaging in a remote-office situation and professional networking. ![]() So it was already on its way out 5-10 years ago.īy 2015-2016 businesses with remote/distributed workers were largely moved to Slack.
